8 Simple Substitutes for Healthy Eating

Do you like to cook but sometimes find it difficult to make healthy meals that actually taste good? Give these cooking "hacks" a whirl. They're kid-tested approved and super easy to swap out.

  1. Swap plain Greek yogurt for sour cream. I use it on baked potatoes, tacos, on top of chili, and chip dip (with some seasonings mixed in).

  2. Swap unsweetened applesauce for oil in baking. The ratio is typically 1:1.

  3. Trade out sugar for agave, Stevia, honey, or pure maple syrup.

  4. Use an air fryer to make homemade fries out of fresh potatoes or yams. To prep, just slice them up, drizzle with a little olive oil and add seasonings like salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix them up and cook for about 16 minutes, shaking halfway through. They should be golden brown. Sprinkle a little more salt on once they’re done.

  5. Try Yonanas in place of ice cream. It’s just frozen pureed bananas. If you have a good blender, you don’t need the official machine.

  6. Trade out pasta for zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash.

  7. For burgers, try ground turkey or use leaner ground beef like 93%.

  8. Use mashed avocado in place of mayo. This healthy fat is so good for you!

Bonus! Here's my fav healthy pancake recipe:

  • 40g old fashioned oats

  • 1 small ripe banana (a little spotty)

  • 1 tsp of stevia

  • Cinnamon

  • 1 egg

  • 90g egg whites

  • Splash of milk (I use unsweetened almond)

Blend it all in a blender, then cook like a regular pancake.

They're thin, kind of like a crepe. Topping ideas: fruit, yogurt, chopped nuts. Try it, it's AMAZING!
